Mechanicville Junior High School

The Junior High School is made up of students in grades 6, 7 & 8 with an enrollment of approximately 290 students. The program of study is administered by a Junior High School principal with the aid of two guidance counselors. The school day is divided into four instructional blocks and 10 total periods.

The instructional course at the Junior High School fosters a nurturing environment while serving as a transition from the elementary to a secondary experience. In grade six, Language Arts is taught in several formats, so that students may benefit from the traditional skills of English, but also gain from exposure to Reading and Literature and an online learning component for skill reinforcement. Mathematics takes a similar form, in which students take a regular class along with an online component for skill development. Grade six students take Social Studies, Science, and Physical Education while partaking in an exploratory experience in the areas of Technology, Family and Consumer Science, Art and Study Skills.

In grades 7 & 8, all students are required to take English, mathematics, social studies, science and physical education. Students in grade seven are required to take health. In grades 7 & 8, students pursue studies in Spanish. Students also benefit from a language arts course designed to bolster writing skills. Among the exploratory offerings in grades 7 & 8 are art, family and consumer science, technology, and band or chorus. Students are provided enrichment in CORE areas through our interdisciplinary projects.

The junior high school houses a science lab, a technology classroom complete with a video production area, a family and consumer science suite along with three classrooms, and cafeteria.

Regular communication with parents takes place through the sending of report cards, four times a year, and is supplemented by interim statements that are mailed at five week intervals.

All instruction is done in real time with live video showing the host and all remote schools.

Our high school prides itself on its community and heritage. We are centrally located to many popular cities around the capital region and maintain a structured, progressive environment centered around progress, student success, and opening doors of opportunity as we prepare our students for successful careers during and after their time at MHS.
