Important Information Regarding ALL Graduation Ceremonies
July 1, 2020
Dear Red Raider Community:
The Mechanicville City School District values culture more than anything. We made building a positive culture our number one priority this year. To reinforce a positive culture there is no greater action than celebrating success.
Once we learned in May that schools were to be closed for the remainder of the year we made the decision that instead of having a drive through graduation, we postponed our end of year celebrations for all students until July when the Capital Region would be in Phase 4 of the NYS reopening plan. In Phase 4, schools were listed to be open for operation.
A tremendous amount of time and energy was spent planning end of year celebrations for all of our students. We partnered with a variety of Saratoga County agencies to ensure we were thoughtful and considerate of every CDC recommendation to appropriately plan for safety.
Unfortunately, despite waiting until Phase 4 the Governor’s office and the State Education Department have released information this morning stating:
“Presently, the NYS Department of Health is investigating the potential of COVID-19 exposure associated with a Horace Greeley High School drive-in graduation ceremony held on June 20 at Chappaqua Train Station in Westchester County. An individual who had recently traveled to Florida and attended the ceremony subsequently began showing symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, 18 more individuals who attended the ceremony or had contact with individuals attending the ceremony have also tested positive.
On June 14, New York State DOH issued guidance to ensure any district that decides to host a graduation ceremony adheres to appropriate protective measures including social distancing, limitations on number of attendees, wearing face coverings, and other precautions. Part of the comprehensive public health response will be to determine whether the guidance had been followed.”
Despite this disappointing news, we are moving forward with in person ceremonies that fall within the NYS guidelines including limiting total attendance to 150 people. The ceremonies will be as follows:
