High School - Summer Updates 8/1/18

Hello Parents!

We hope this finds all of our students and their families enjoying their summer.  Here at Mechanicville Jr./Sr. High School there are so many changes taking place to grow and enhance our district.
As part of our capital project, there is much work being done this summer to the 9-12 end of the building. A new cafeteria and athletic complex is being finished- the auditorium flooring has been given a makeover, and there has been extensive and what will be ongoing work in the high school classrooms, hallways, and restrooms in regard to renovation work has and will continue to be ongoing throughout the year.  Improvements to the infrastructure, security, and network are a few things that have been happening around our building.
Starting this 2018-19 school year, we are excited to be offering a breakfast program before the school day for all student in grades 6-12 as well as the opportunity to offer new lunch options for our students, one option which will allow students to pre-order a customized meal online!  Details will follow in regard to these programs.
Also starting this September we will have an amended start time where our school day will begin at 8:03am, keeping the dismissal time of 2:25pm the same. This time change was prompted by requests from many students and parents to allow for all staff to be available each day until a minimum of2:53pm for questions, extra help, meetings, or other such need after the school day ends, all students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with staff. Duration of blocks will change by 5 minutes from 78 minutes to 73 minutes per block to allow for this opportunity. This change will minimize student schedule impact, increase accessibility of staff for students, and keep our district well above the mandated time for students in the classroom.
Please note that our first day of classes for students will be on Thursday, September 6th.  Also note that drop off this year will occur under the red canopy for all students in grades 6-12 before school - the "Main Entrance" and "Middle School Entrance" will no longer be used in the morning before school. This change is necessitated by the location of our new cafeteria for the breakfast program.  Dismissal will stay the same with buses lined up along the bus circle at 2:25pm.  Also save the date for our annual Open House - which will be held on Thursday, September 13th at 6:30.  Additionally, 9th Grade Freshman Orientation will be held on Tuesday, September 4th at 6:30pm.
Lastly as we continue to prepare to start a new school year, we are excited to offer our students more class electives that we are confident will interest our students in grades 9-12.  Students should check their school e-mail accounts, read the descriptions for electives, and select any of the new electives that they are interested in taking.  Obviously there is limited space and scheduling constraints may limit class population, so there are no guarantees that students will be able to fit the class that they are interested in taking, but nonetheless, we encourage students to review and select.   Such courses include: Personal Fitness, Lifestyles and Wellness, Elements of Theater, Guitar Tech, and Music in Our Lives, and Computer Hardware Concepts - student simply need to sign-in to their e-mail, read the course description (which can be viewed at the bottom of this message) and select what they are interested in via the corresponding message sent to their inbox.
More updates will follow throughout the summer - enjoy the weather, prepare for a great year, and stay safe!   Thank you and be well!
