Food service has begun using a new platform, NutriSlice, for the 2018-19 school year. It is a free, downloadable app that allows patrons to access the food service menus for their buildings. In addition, it will allow patrons in the Jr/Sr High School to pre-order their lunches!
The cost of a school-prepared lunch will increase district-wide beginning in September 2018. An Elementary School lunch will cost $2.45 and a Jr./Sr. High School lunch will cost $2.70. Breakfast costs will be $1.00 for Elementary students and $1.75 for Jr./Sr. High School students. The increase is due to rising food costs and the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act is a federal law which calls for public schools to provide more healthful, but more expensive food choices to students.
Payments can be made with cash, checks made payable to the Mechanicville School Lunch Fund, or online with a credit or debit card. We love to serve your children
The cafeteria staff and I are proud to be providing food service for the children of Mechanicville. We are very excited to have the opportunity to serve your child a nutritious meal every day, and would like to take this opportunity to give you a brief overview of the program.
All of the food that we serve is prepared fresh daily in our kitchens, and consists of several daily entrée choices. In addition to the entrée, each day will feature two side dishes and a variety of milk. All of our menus are planned to meet the Recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans by age and grade of the student. We also offer a variety of snacks that may be purchased each day in addition to the complete reimbursable meal.
Meal prices for lunch are as follows:
Student Full Price Lunch – $2.45 in the elementary school and $2.70 in the high school
Student Reduced Price Lunch (for those who qualify) - $.25 (paid by the week)
Student Full Price Breakfast - $1.00 in the elementary school and $1.75 in the high school
Student Reduced Price Breakfast (for those who qualify) -$.25 (paid by the week)
Milk -$. 50

NOTE: In the case of a 2-hour delay, breakfast will not be served.

Nutritious meals at school help to keep our students healthy and alert.
Based on the food pyramid, each meal will include a protein, a whole grain, a wider variety of vegetables and fruit as well as a dairy.
In addition, portion sizes and calories will be based on a students’ age and grade. The menus are labeled in such a way as to help parents and students identify the necessary food groups. In the cafeteria line, students will be able to know if they are fulfilling the nutritional guidelines as everything will be labeled by food group.
Alternate lunches are available and listed on the menu.

Know Your Child's Balance
There are several options for parents who want to know if or when their student’s cafeteria balance is low or in a deficit.
1. Log onto myschoolbucks.com and set up a low-balance warning.
2. Look for the bi-weekly email notice from the school. Parents of students with low balances will receive an email stating such on Tuesdays and Fridays.
3. Look for the weekly paper notification from the school. Parents of elementary students who owe $10 or more will receive this.

Now you can prepay online.For every 20 lunches that are prepaid, you will receive one free lunch.All you have to do is sign-up for mySchoolbucks.com.Click here to register.LOW BALANCE ALERT:If you want to receive a low-balance warning on your child's account, please go into My Email Preferences on the mySchoolbucks website. Once you set it to receive notices, you will get an email notifying you of a low balance.Parents may prepay for lunches either online or by using the yellow prepayment envelopes available in each buildings’ main office. Each pre-paid meal will be recorded and deducted only when your child receives a meal. Prepaying is a good way of ensuring that your child does not use his or her lunch money for a la carte or snack items, because prepayments are applied to complete meals only.

Be Aware of Food Allergies
Over 12 million Americans have food allergies; more than 3 million of them are children (that’s almost 1 out of every 25 kids). The most common allergy-causing foods are peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, etc), milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat and soy.
There are currently several students in our district with lfe threatening food allergies. Ingestion of the offending food can cause:
- Tingling in the Mouth
- Swelling of the tongue and throat
- Difficulty Breathing
- And even death
Food allergies are very serious. It only takes one bite to cause a disaster. Milk is in everything from crackers to vitamins and is frequently used as a filler in many products. A candy that is processed in the same plant that houses peanuts is considered unsafe. While buying a student a snack or an extra treat may be a very nice and totally innocent thing to do, please understand there could be serious consequences. A child crying because the cafeteria staff wouldn’t let them have a particular food item may not understand that it is for their own health and safety. The school nurse and the cafeteria staff have a list of children with food allergies. If you insist on buying a treat for a student please check the list first.
