Saratoga County Youth Court, a program sponsored by the Prevention Council.
What is Youth Court? Youth court is a voluntary alternative to the criminal justice system for young people who have committed a crime or an offense. The goal of youth court is to intervene in early anti-social, delinquent, and criminal behavior, as well as to reduce the incidence and prevent the escalation of such behavior. Positions needed include the judge, prosecutor, defender, clerk/bailiff, jury foreperson and the juror. Please feel free to stop by the guidance office for further information or you can contact the Saratoga County Youth Court, The Prevention Council at www.preventioncouncil.org or email lisayc24@hotmail.com. *COLLEGE FAIRS AND OPEN HOUSES*
Union College is having a "Getting to Know U" weekend. It will be held Saturday October 9 through Monday October 11. It is required that students complete an application for this event. It is suggested that students who apply for this event have at least an 88+ GPA, are rank in the top 20% of their graduating class, take challenging courses, and are involved in extracurricular activities. The Hudson Mohawk College Association will be hosting a college fair in the high school cafeteria on Thursday September 16, 2010 from 12:30 until 1:15. Some colleges attending are Maria College, the Sage Colleges, College of Saint Rose, Hudson Valley Community College, Schenectady County Community College, Adirondack Community College, Siena College, Union College, Skidmore College, and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Hudson Valley Community College is hosting a college fair Wednesday September 29, 2010 in the Edward F. McDonough Recreation Center at 80 Vandenburgh Ave. The hours are 9am until Noon and 6-8 pm. Over 160 colleges will be attending.
Interested in colleges out of state? Bridgewater College located in Greenville, Virginia is having open houses on October 23 and November 13, 2010 as well as on January 29 and February 12, 2011. Bridgewater College offers President's Merit and ACE scholarships which are based on academic performance. Other forms of financial aid are available. Over 95% of Bridgewater students receive some form of financial aid.
Towson University located in Towson, Maryland is having open houses for high school seniors on Fridays and Saturdays in October and November, specifically October 15, 16 and November 5, 6, 12, 13. Towson was named to The Princeton Review's Top 50 Best Values in Public Universities and Forbes Top 100 Public Colleges and Universities. Towson offers full scholarships to math and science students. Wendy's High School Heisman
This award is offered to high school seniors who excel in athletics as well as academics and student leadership. Students must have at least a B average to apply. Applications can be completed online at www.wendysheisman.com. Applications must be completed by October 3, 2010 by 6 pm. Completed applications must be reviewed and confirmed online by a guidance counselor. One male and one female from each school will be named school winners in late October. State finalists will be announced in November. National finalists will be announced late in November and will be invited to New York City for Heisman weekend activities. If you happen to be one of the first 41,100 to enter you could win a free Wendy's gift card.
Nestle Very Best in Youth-This program looks for teens who are passionate about giving back to their community, do well academically, and have shown the ability to lead others. Teens elected for this award can win an all-expense paid trip to LA on July 23, 2011 for the awards ceremony.
